The Joy Closet of Hopkinsville is looking to continue helping out children in the foster system, even after they age out of the system, and have launched the Eagle Fly program to do just that.
Appearing on the WHOP Early Bird Show Tuesday morning, Founder Heather Gray says that the evidence shows that although they’re able to leave the foster system when they turn 18, many still need help figuring out how to be an adult, and this program is designed to do just that.
She says it would pair the young adult with a mentor that would show them the ropes on how to get things done, from finding a doctor to getting a job.
Gray says they’re seeking willing mentors now and they’re hoping to get a large group.
Mentors should be willing to a commit to a one-year duration, have a flexible availability to be reached by phone by the young adult and meet face-to-face at least a couple times a month. They’ll need to complete a back ground check and possibly some training. Gray says it’s all about preparing these folks to succeed once out of the system and into society.
