State, local leaders discuss public safety in public parks, trails

State and local government officials came together recently to discuss public safety in local parks, in reference to an attack that happened on the Greenway System in Hopkinsville in July.

According to a news release, Representative Myron Dossett brought together community leaders to speak with State House Floor Leader Steven Rudy and Chair of the Appropriations of Revenue Committee Representative Jason Petrie to discuss possible solutions for reducing crime along the trail.

Representative Dossett says, “Throughout my time in the legislature, I’ve always had an open door for community members to contact me with any questions or issues. This year is the first-time crime, in particular, is a top concern. While there’s not a one size fits all approach to keeping our communities safe, we will take a comprehensive look at helping the city and our citizens.”

Dossett noted the conversations focused on additional solutions and preventative safety measures that will support local efforts, with the City of Hopkinsville already confronting the issue by installing 32 new security cameras along the trail.

City Councilman Travis Martin says, “The security of our community and specifically the rail trail area is a huge concern for me. I reached out to Rep. Dossett to see if we could get some help on the state level.”
