Hopkinsville Solid Waste Enterprise is still looking for residents who want to sign up for the optional curbside recycling program.
The number of city residents and businesses signed up for recycling has dwindled dramatically since the program returned after the pandemic and it has never been able to financially break even.
After initially saying earlier this year that the recycling program would cease to operate due to the numbers, Solid Waste Enterprise General Manager Tony Sicari went to council last month and said the board will take a couple months to step back and reevaluate how to move forward while continuing to serve the customers they have.
Appearing on WHOP Thursday, Sicari said the community’s reaction to the initial news of the shutdown made him decide to take as second look at it.
Many of the facilities that accept the recycled goods shut down during the early part of the pandemic and that created its own set of challenges.
They need between two-to-three thousand people signed up for recycling to break even on the program and Sicari says existing customers can get credits on their account by referring someone else to sign up.
