Bids show consolidated high school to cost at least $199 million

Due to inflation and other factors, it will cost over double the price initially estimated to construct the consolidated Hopkinsville-Christian County Academy after the bids were opened Tuesday afternoon.

A statement from the district says the base cost bids without any additional add-ons were about $203 million from A&K Construction and $199 million from DW Wilburn. The email goes on to say, “District officials are evaluating their options at this time.”

Several school system leaders spoke to the Hopkinsville Rotary Club Tuesday, detailing features of the facility.

Consolidation Coordinator Kevin Crider walked the Rotarians through a virtual tour of the proposed building and says safety will be a priority with anyone entering encountering a resource officer and metal detectors.

Assistant Superintendent Jessica Addison talked about the four academy pathways that will be in the Hopkinsville Christian County Academy, saying teachers will be more empowered to show students how the curriculum they’re learning will apply to their chosen field.

The speakers reminded that the freshman academy is beginning in the upcoming school year in the high schools and the schools will be effectively merged in two buildings next year when the academy model will be officially implemented.

Assistant Superintendent Josh Hunt had said that the school board could consider voting on bids as soon as next week’s meeting.
