Local lawmakers are praising the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, while Governor Andy Beshear is concerned about where it leaves Kentucky.
Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County believes the Supreme Court made the right decision and calls it an “exciting day.”
He notes that the General Assembly had legislation already in place that now bans all abortions in Kentucky, except for when the mother’s life is in danger.
Westerfield also encouraged churches and pro-life individuals to support pregnant women now and going forward.
State Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke also praised the Supreme Court ruling.
Meanwhile, Governor Beshear issued a statement saying, “Today’s decision triggers an extremist Kentucky law that creates a total ban in Kentucky that will eliminate all options for victims of rape or incest. As the former chief prosecutor of Kentucky, I know that these violent crimes happen, and not having options for victims of rape and incest is wrong.”
