Murder suspect’s request for different judge denied

The man charged with murder for a fatal shooting in December on Clearman Court in Hopkinsville had a request for a new judge in his case denied Wednesday morning in Christian Circuit Court.

Hopkinsville police allege that on December 8, 49-year old Bobby Spikes of Hopkinsville and his girlfriend called 35-year old Stanley Bussell to a home on Clearman Court to work on a vehicle.

Bussell’s body wasn’t discovered until 34-year old Candace Marcel of Hopkinsville was found dead in an abandoned vehicle on Cerulean Road in Trigg County and a search warrant was served at Marcel’s Clearman Court home.

The arrest warrant for Spikes says he fatally shot Bussell in the head.

Spikes and Marcel had been in some type of relationship and had once lived together, though they were no longer sharing a home, according a detective who testified at a hearing in December. Kentucky State Police continue to investigate Marcel’s death and no one has been charged in her murder.

During a hearing Wednesday, Spikes told Circuit Judge John Atkins he wanted him removed from the bench in his case because Atkins once prosecuted him over 25 years ago.

Another motion up for consideration was postponed to give Spikes and his public defender time to file an affidavit of indigency.

Spikes is charged with murder and lodged in the Christian County Jail.
