Todd County Public Library receives grant for new building

The Todd County Public Library has been awarded a Public Library Facilities Construction Fund Grant from the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives to construct a new library building.

The approximately 10,000-square-foot library will be located at 507 South Main Street in Elkton near the Elkton Volunteer Fire Department and the Todd County Senior Citizens’ Center, according to a news release, which says the site was made possible through the generosity of Kelvin DeBerry, Brad Shemwell, and the late Guy Mallory and the Mallory family.

DeBerry and Shemwell sold the Library property several years ago at a discounted price as the Library’s Board of Trustees anticipated future construction. The late Mr. Guy Mallory and the Mallory family also donated, prior to Mallory’s death, an additional piece of land enlarging the site for future construction.

The Todd County Public Library will receive $212,150 a year from KDLA for the next 20 years to assist with debt retirement.

The news release quotes Todd County Public Library Director Audrea Clairmont as saying, “When I began working as the Library’s Director in 2013, I immediately saw a need for a newer library with more space and up-to-date technology. Every year we have improved our facility, and we have spoken to others about our needs. We are so honored KDLA has recognized our needs for a larger and more modern facility.”

The current library at 302 East Main Street has been in its current location since 1989 in a building originally constructed during the 1960’s. It has approximately 3300 available square feet, while the new facility will provide for the public an estimated 6700 square feet.

In addition to expanded print collection space, the new library will add programming space for adults, teens, and children, a computer area, a family and local history room, storage and workspaces, a small conference room, and quiet study areas.

Noting this is a “major step for Todd County and a tremendous investment in the future of our citizens,” Susan Carroll, president of the Board of Trustees, added, “The library staff, Friends of the Library, the trustees, and so many others are so excited for this opportunity. As our county grows, services provided by our new library will also be able to expand. We so look forward to our community’s support and involvement in this project.”
