There will now be a democratic primary for Mayor of Hopkinsville, after city councilwoman Alethea West filed to seek that seat.
West—who filed as a Democrat—represents Ward 3 on city council, but she filed her paperwork to run for mayor Thursday, saying that she brings the experience, drive and community connection needed to move Hopkinsville forward.
West has many goals she would like to achieve if elected to office, including enhancing conversations with the public, an initiative aimed at preparing local youth for the future and the creation of a Neighborhood Grant program.
West says Hopkinsville, like any other city, has its share of challenges, and she thinks some of them could be improved by more open dialogue between elected officials and those they serve.
The mayor’s seat is currently held by Wendell Lynch, who has expressed his intent to not seek reelection in 2022. West will face Democrat Michael Pendleton in a primary election, and who ever wins that will go on to square off against either Republican J.R. Knight or Republican Vince Ferrell.
West says she will have a mayoral website and social media pages up and running by February, where people will be able to learn more about her and her stance on local issues.
