Plea deal tossed out in Kenwood Drive shooting incident

Christian Circuit Judge John Atkins on Wednesday morning tossed out a plea deal reached in a shooting incident from March of last year on Kenwood Drive.

In November, 36-year-old Shequita Buckner of Hopkinsville entered an Alford plea to second-degree assault, amended down from first-degree, as part of a plea deal that comes with a recommended seven year sentence.

Defense attorney Jarrod Jackson argued for her sentence to be probated Wednesday, but Judge John Atkins noted Buckner is not eligible because a firearm was used in commission of a felony.

Since Buckner entered her plea believing probation was possible, Judge Atkins scheduled another hearing for February 2 when attorneys should have another deal or be prepared to schedule a trial.

Buckner allegedly shot 36-year old Kim Harrell in the arm during an altercation on Kenwood Drive on the morning of March 22, 2021, though Buckner has argued she feared Harrell was armed with a gun. Harrell required treatment at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville.
