President Joe Biden made his way to Kentucky Wednesday to tour the devastation left in Mayfield and Dawson Springs from tornadoes Friday night.

Air Force One landed on Fort Campbell about 10 a.m. and the president then took a helicopter to Mayfield, where he surveyed damage there before heading to Dawson Springs in the afternoon, where he participated in a press conference with Governor Andy Beshear.

He says politics become secondary in the face of disasters such as the one that hit Western Kentucky over the weekend and he announced that the federal government is going to cover 100 percent of the cost of clean-up and other expenses for the first 30 days.

The president says his administration will remain focused on finding ways to help the people of Kentucky recover. He says he was shaken by the destruction, but during his tour he has heard countless stories about neighbors stepping up to help each other, and the abundant support from other communities.

The president recently approved a federal major disaster declaration for several counties that received the worst damage and additional counties are likely to be added, along with areas in Arkansas and Tennessee. President Biden made his way back to Fort Campbell in the afternoon, where he departed back to Washington D.C.
