A Christian County grand jury will hear the case against the suspect accused of shooting a man the day before Thanksgiving on East 18th Street.
During a preliminary hearing Wednesday morning in Christian District Court for 32-year old Demario White, Hopkinsville Police Detective Tyler Hancock testified White and 28-year old Devaunte Hampton had been in a dispute and were supposed to try and talk it out.
Surveillance footage from a nearby camera showed things went south when Hampton went to White’s door.
White allegedly fired a gun and shot Hampton in the leg as he was leaving the home.
Hampton was flown to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville for treatment and a woman who was grazed by a bullet did not require hospitalization.
Hancock acknowledged to defense attorney Michael Cotthoff that Hampton didn’t have permission to be inside the apartment he went into and that Hampton will possibly also be charged with burglary in the incident.
Cotthoff requested a reduction of White’s $50,000 bond, but it was denied, as Judge Lindsey Adams noted White has admitted to firing a handgun as a convicted felon.
Judge Adams sent the case to the grand jury for consideration, determining there was sufficient evidence a felony had been committed.
