Local students perform well at KYA

Eighteen students representing Hopkinsville Middle School performed well at the Kentucky Youth Assembly this week in Frankfort.

KYA is a mock-legislature where students from across the state come together and write bills, debate bills and elect officers in order to have a true government simulation.

Twelve of those students were 6th graders from Millbrooke Elementary School, one was an eighth grader from Christian County Middle and five are eighth graders from HMS.

The entire delegation received the 2021 Outstanding Delegation trophy.

Foster Jackson, a Hopkinsville eighth grader, was elected president of the Senate and will reign in this role next year at Middle School KYA.

Ashton Grace, former HMS student reigned as Lt. Governor at this year’s KYA.

Jordan Owen, a sixth grader from Millbrooke received an Outstanding Speaker award; and Holleigh Leckman, also from Millbrooke, was recognized as an Outstanding Delegate.

Ella Kate Colley a Hopkinsville Middle School eighth grader, served as Clerk of the Senate; and Andrew Mayes from Hopkinsville middle served as the Lt. Governor’s Chief of Staff.

Sophie Wilson, an eighth grader at Christian County, served as committee chair.

Millbrooke sixth graders Reese Amerson, Chesney Hale, Jordan Owen, and London Taylor-Winston served as bill sponsors of a bill that passed both the KYA House and Senate and was signed by the KYA Lt. Governor.

The local Kentucky Youth Assembly advisors are Kim Batts, Brittany Cansler and Jennifer Jatczak.
