ESPN reports Texas Tech has fired coach Matt Wells after compiling a record of 13-17. Wells was in his third season at Tech with the Red Raiders having a 5-3 record this season. Tech blew a 14 point lead in Saturday’s loss to Kansas State. Sonny Cumbee-who returned this season as the Red Raiders offensive coordinator-will serve as the interim coach.

MLB

The St. Louis Cardinals named Oliver Marmol as manager today. Marmol was the bench coach for former skipper Mike Shildt. The 35-year-old Marmol will become the Redbirds 37th manager since 1900.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports MLB is apparently heading for its first work stoppage since 1994-95 when the Collective Bargaining Agreement expires on December 1st. Negotiations have been taking place since last spring, but it appears neither side have made proposals that will lead toward replacing the current agreement.

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy has tested positive for COVID-19. Nagy made the announcement after coaching the Bears in a 38-3 loss to Tampa Bay Sunday. Nagy said he “felt good” despite the diagnosis. Nagy will have to have two negative tests before being allowed to return to the team.

Olympics
ESPN reports competitors in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will be subject to daily tests for COVID-19 and will be required to remain in a closed loop that includes transport between the various Games venues, organizers said in guidelines released on Monday. China-whose measures to tackle COVID-19 are among the world’s strictest-has already said international spectators will not be allowed to enter the country for the Games, which will run from February 4-20.
