Lawmakers head to Frankfort Tuesday for special session

Legislators head back to Frankfort Tuesday morning for a special session of the Kentucky General Assembly, as they will be tasked to decide what measures to place into effect to address the surge in COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

State Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County says while there may be common ground the Republican House and Senate can find with the governor in some areas, he doesn’t expect any type of mask mandate.

Representative Walker Thomas of Hopkinsville says it’ll be important to give school systems flexibility for utilizing virtual instruction and there’s a shortage of healthcare workers in rural Kentucky to address.

The General Assembly must meet to approve any measures after lawmakers stripped the governor of many of his emergency powers earlier this year, but Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke says he has a desire to work with and not against Governor Beshear.

Lawmakers will also be asked to extend a state of emergency for flooding in Nelson County and they could vote on an economic development incentive package for potential job-makers considering Kentucky.
