Attorneys are going to continue discussions and look over evidence this week, but a trial date could be set soon for the man accused of shooting two men at a gas station earlier this year on East Ninth Street.
Jaylynn Cheatham has four separate cases, including an older one that had been probated and defense attorney David Rye said he hadn’t gotten the evidence in that one yet. He says Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jerad Smith has made him an offer for a plea and he’ll go over it and the evidence with Cheatham this week.
Judge Andrew Self scheduled another pre-trial conference for Monday and they’ll schedule a trial if there’s no resolution.
Hopkinsville police responded to the Marathon gas station on the evening of March 28 and found 21-year-old Darrius Quarles of Hopkinsville with gunshot wounds and 38-year-old Bryan Jones of Cadiz later arrived at Jennie Stuart Medical Center with a gunshot wound. Quarles would later be transferred to a Nashville hospital for treatment, while Jones sustained less severe injuries.
Cheatham is charged with first-degree assault, four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment and attempted murder.
Cheatham was recently indicted for second-degree strangulation, first-degree strangulation, second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment in relation to two unrelated incidents in May where he allegedly assaulted two female victims, causing serious injuries.
