Bear sighted in Charleston area of Hopkins County

There’s been another bear sighting in our region—this time in Hopkins County.

Pam Ahlert posted photos of the young bear Wednesday afternoon and said he was observed in the Dunn Church area near Charleston.

It could certainly be the same bear that’s been observed in Henderson, Webster and Caldwell counties in recent weeks, as Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officials say bears can move 20 miles a day.

They say it is not unusual in the early summer for young male bears to wander well outside of the established bear range in eastern Kentucky. These bears get pushed out of the area by older, dominant males, and may wander up to several weeks or more into unfamiliar territory in search of good habitat and prospective mates before they return to the mountains where they were raised.

As always, never approach a bear and do not feed them.
