Trenton brings back Memorial Day service, remembers those who paid ultimate sacrifice

A crowd gathered at Trenton’s Edgewood Cemetery Sunday for the first time in two years to revive the Memorial Day weekend tradition of remembering and honoring the men and women who’ve died fighting for freedom.

Following a performance of God Bless the USA by Jessica Chester McLaughlin, Army veteran David Tucker of Clarksville gave the keynote address, reminding that freedom would be long gone without the sacrifice of those who have been willing to die for their country.

He says many men and women who have come home from war over the centuries brought back mental and physical wounds that took their lives years later.

Julie Hamlet, an English teacher at Todd County Middle School, read the name of every known veteran from the Trenton area from as far back as the Civil War. She considered the tough circumstances and fears those veterans must have faced while serving their country.

Will Shelton played Taps to close a service that was well-attended with nearly perfect weather for the occasion.
