Woman charged in Todd Co. murder arraigned, trial date set

Arraignment was held Wednesday in Todd Circuit Court for the woman charged with murder for the September, 2019 death of Ted Thompson in Elkton.

Kentucky State Police investigated and say 32-year old Krystie Chancey used a pillow to smother the 61-year old Thompson to death at his home on Shelby Avenue in Elkton before she and co-defendant Russell Walker fled to Tennessee in Thompson’s stolen vehicle.

The murder charge was dismissed without prejudice in October after Walker fled the area while out on bond. He was recently arrested again in Christian County and has since been indicted for bail jumping.

His original charges included five counts of receiving stolen property and two counts of felony theft for allegedly helping Chancey steal electronics and the vehicle from Thompson’s home after his death and Commonwealth’s Attorney Neil Kerr said his testimony was crucial to making a case against Chancey.

A not guilty plea was entered for Chancey in Todd Circuit court, with her public defenders requesting that she be allowed to access phone numbers from a cellphone being held as evidence, so she may contact her children while incarcerated, which the judge granted.

A trial date was determined promptly Wednesday, with Judge Joe Hendricks setting it for November 8, with the expectation that trial could last a week.  A pretrial hearing was set for June 2. Walker also pled not guilty to his bail jumping charge.

Chancey pled guilty in November to felony theft by unlawful taking, which was enhanced with a persistent felony offender conviction. Those charges were in relation to Thompson’s stolen property and the deal came with a 10-year prison sentence.
