Horse on I-24 causes injury accident

Two people were taken to the hospital early Sunday morning after a horse stepped into traffic on I-24 in Christian County.

Christian County Sheriff’s Sgt. Adam Vanderkolk says the horse walked into the westbound lanes of I-24 near the 90 mile-marker about 12:30 a.m.

Ashira Gardner of Bowling Green was driving the first car that struck the horse and was taken by EMS to a local hospital for a possible broken hand, according to Deputy Andy Sanderson. The driver of the second car was Nichole Wellsted of Trigg County. She and a child passenger were transported to Tennova Health Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The horse was killed in the crash. Police believe the horse likely escaped from its fence on an area farm.
