Gov. says Jefferson Davis statue likely to be relocated to Fairview

Governor Andy Beshear announced the deaths of nine more Kentuckians during his Thursday afternoon briefing and says he’s called for a board meeting Friday to remove the statue of Fairview native and confederate president Jefferson Davis from the state capitol and it’s next destination could be Todd County.

The governor has called a special meeting of the Historic Properties Advisory Commission Friday and after speaking with each member, he expects a bi-partisan vote to remove the statue of Jefferson Davis.

Nothing is final, but the governor says current plans are for the statue to be relocated to the Jefferson Davis Monument State Historic Site in Fairview.

If the commission were to vote against removing the statue, Beshear says he’ll look into what options he has to remove the statue unilaterally.

There were only 69 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported, but Governor Beshear was quick to point out that number is artificially low due to a backlog of case reporting in a federal system.

That makes 11,945 total cases, with 3,379 of those patients recovered. The nine new deaths marks 493 since the pandemic began.

Tennessee gained 471 coronavirus cases to 28,340 and there were five additional deaths, making that total 441. Robertson County gained 10 new cases to 594, Montgomery County was up by three to 312 and Stewart County remains at 14 cases.
