League of Women Voters hosting forums for council candidates

The local League of Women Voters will host forums for candidates running in the primary for Hopkinsville City Council Thursday.

There will be five forums—one for each ward that features a primary election.

They begin at 10 a.m. with the two Democrats running in Ward 1—incumbent Darvin Adams and former councilman Thomas Grant. The winner of that primary will face Republican Natasha Francis in the general election.

At 11 a.m., former council member Paula Knight will meet Kenneth Hatzakorzian in a Ward 6 debate. The winner of that Democratic primary will face Republican Travis Martin in the fall.

Two Republicans—local realtor Dustin Gilbert and former councilman Richard Covington—will square off in a debate at 1 p.m. and the winner of that primary will square off with incumbent Ward 7 Democrat Terry Parker in November.

Democrat Ward 9 incumbent councilmember Patricia Bell will debate Ardell Owens at 2 p.m. and the winner of that primary will be unopposed in November.

The final forum of the afternoon will feature Republicans Steve Keel and Robert Almy—with the winner of that primary to meet Ward 10 incumbent Democrat Jimmy Dossett in the general election.

All of the forums will be at the Downtown Municipal Center, but crowds will not be possible due to the pandemic. The forums will be aired live on City TV and on the City of Hopkinsville website.
