Del Angel enters guilty plea in 2017 fatal shooting

Sergio Del Angel, the man accused in the 2017 shooting death of Kristofer Armstrong, entered a guilty plea to first-degree manslaughter and other charges for his role in Armstrong’s death.

Appearing in Christian Circuit Court Friday, Del Angel entered the guilty plea to charges of first-degree manslaughter, three counts of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, three counts of wanton endangerment and tampering with physical evidence.

Those charges come with a recommended sentence of 20 years in prison, with parole eligibility after he serves 85 percent, according to Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jerad Smith.

Del Angel’s attorney, David Rye, requested that his client be released pending final sentencing, with Judge John Atkins telling him to file a written motion.

Final sentencing was set for August 5, with Smith saying that several of Armstrong’s family members intend to write victim impact statements that will be given to the judge.  Del Angel had originally been charged with murder, but it was amended down to manslaughter. In 2017, Del Angel shot Armstrong, who was on the front porch of a residence on Kenwood Drive.
