AG Cameron agrees Jefferson Davis statue should be removed from capitol

Attorney General Daniel Cameron is joining Governor Andy Beshear in supporting the removal of the statue of Fairview native and confederate president Jefferson Davis from the state capitol rotunda.

The governor made his assertion during a Thursday afternoon news conference when asked about the controversial statue by a reporter.

Beshear called the statue a “symbol that divides us.”

Cameron told the Herald Leader that Davis is part of Kentucky’s past, “but he didn’t define our future, Abraham Lincoln did.”

He continues, “I think the Davis statue should be relocated, but it is up to the Historic Properties Advisory Commission. If the commission decides to replace it, I can think of many other historical figures more deserving of a permanent home in our Capitol.”

Neither the governor nor Attorney General Cameron mentioned the Jefferson Davis Monument Historic Site at the birthplace in Fairview.
