Wednesday marks what would have been Martin Luther King Jr.’s 91st birthday, and the community is celebrating with several events this weekend.
Speaking to Christian Fiscal Court Tuesday, School board member Tom Bell says there will be a new event at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Hopkinsville Community College, where they’ll have Dr. Alissa Young as the keynote speaker and performances from local schools.
He says they’ll present awards to several students for essays they wrote about MLK, along with others who wrote poems or created visual art.
The theme is “What Freedom Means to Me” and the event, presented by Focus 21st Century and HCC, will take place in the HCC auditorium and gallery area. It’s not the only event taking place, as the annual NAACP MLK March starts at 9:30 a.m. Monday morning at the Boys and Girls Club and then makes its way over to First Street Baptist Church for the service. There will also be a service Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Virginia Street Baptist Church.
In Hopkins County, services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Byrnes Auditorium in Madisonville, with performances from local groups and keynote speaker Reverend Dr. Kilen Gray.
