Students, VFW honor local veterans

Veterans of Foreign War Post 1913 heard from the winners of the Patriot Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contest during their annual Veterans Day celebration Monday.

Every year, students from the surrounding area compete in the essay contests not only for a chance to win some money and prizes, but also to honor veterans and the sacrifices and service they’ve given to the country.  Eva Blankenship was the winner of the Voice of Democracy and read her essay, saying thanks to the military service men and women, citizens of America are safe and able to live their lives free.

Avery Adcock was the winner of the Patriot Pen essay contest and says America is made great by many things, including the selflessness of the military and the diversity in its people.

This year the VFW recognized an area teacher for their efforts with the students, and the winner was Gateway Academy educator Patti Messamore, who Gateway Assistant Principal Alicia Lancaster, who says Messamore strives to teach her students how to use logical thinking and research to make wise decisions.

The VFW also took the time to recognize all the veterans that were in attendance, of which there were many that represented several wars and times. The Voice of Democracy and Patriot Pen contests are nationally contested and the winners will go on to compete for the chance to win $30,000.
