Kiwanis hears from CASA program about it’s mission

The Kiwanis Club of Hopkinsville got to learn more about the CASA—or Court Appointed Special Advocate—program and how they’re helping local children at Thursday’s meeting.

Virginia Erxleben is the Executive Director of the program that just recently came to Christian County, and says it’s designed to help children in Christian County who are victims of dependency, abuse or neglect. She says a judge appoints an advocate to go along with a child who is involved in the court process and make sure they are getting the care and support they need—since January, they have had 123 cases.

Linda Farmer is currently the only active volunteer, though there will soon be others helping her, and she explained what an advocate does, including home and school visits, checking medical needs and more.

She says it’s similar to what a social worker would do, but whereas they might have upwards of 30 cases, she gets to focus on one child at a time.

CASA Board Chair Rico Rodriguez says the program wouldn’t be possible without help and support from the community, and they intend to keep caring for local children as much as possible. To make a donation to the cause or learn more, contact the program at 270-887-4009.
