Nominations being accepted for Hal and Bettye Thurmond, Volunteer Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for possible recipients of the Hal and Bettye Thurmond Award and the Volunteer of the Year Award, which are presented at the Mayor’s Unity Breakfast in October.

For the Hal and Bettye Thurmond Award, nominees need to be someone in the Hopkinsville, Christian County area who is making a difference in the community through their dedication to human relations. Nominations, along with a brief explanation on why they should receive the award, must be turned in by 4 p.m. on October 5.

The award is named for Hal Thurmond and his wife Bettye whose work to integrate housing, lunch counters, and public schools and to improve race relations in Christian County in the 1950s and 60s earned them a posthumous induction into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame in the fall of 2006.

The Volunteer of the Year Award is to honor someone in the community who has shown outstanding service to Hopkinsville and Christian County.

Nominations can be turned in to the Hopkinsville Human Relations Commission located at 715 South Virginia Street. For more information, call 270-887-4010.

The Mayor’s Unity Breakfast will be October 24 at 7:30 a.m. at the James E. Bruce Convention Center. Nominations must be turned in by October 4.
