Low voter turnout expected in area, state Tuesday

A very low voter turnout is expected locally and statewide for Tuesday’s primary election for state constitutional offices, but prognosticators are hoping they are wrong.

Christian County Elections Coordinator Melinda Humphries says about 6 percent of Christian County’s registered voters are expected to vote, based on absentee numbers.

She reminds that only Democrats and Republicans are eligible to vote in the primary.

Meanwhile, Todd County Clerk Leslie Cunningham expects turnout to be a little higher because of the wet-dry vote in Elkton.

She notes that all registered voters in city of Elkton’s three precincts can vote, regardless of party affiliation, and the ballot question regarding alcohol sales will be very simple.

The only Todd County polling location change is that Allensville voters will vote at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

Trigg County Clerk Carmen Finley is expecting about 11 percent voter turnout.

She says western Kentucky can have a big impact on the primary results, if its residents will only take the time to get out and vote.

Statewide, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is projecting a turnout of 12.5 percent.

Voters will choose candidates for constitutional offices including governor, attorney general, agriculture commissioner, state auditor, treasurer and secretary of state.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. and anyone standing in line at 6 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

Anyone seeing suspicious activity at a polling location should call the Attorney General’s hotline at 1-800-328-VOTE.
