Joanna Mack named Woman of the Year, visionary women celebrated

The winner of the 2019 Fannie Bronson Postell Woman of the Year Award was announced at the Women’s History Month Celebration hosted by the Human Relations Commission.

This year’s theme was “Visionary Women: Creating a Legacy” and the She Talks panel and presentation focused on the women who came before to pave the way for the women of the future, who will carry the torch onward.

The panelists consisted of Kentucky New Era Editor Zirconia Alleyne, Fiscal Court Magistrate Magaline Ferguson, Trilogy Center Director Holly Perez-Knight and Fannie Louise Maddox. Each spoke about how important mentoring is to both receive and give, not only to women but all those who seek education.

Ferguson had some advice for young women—have confidence, speak your goals into being and keep moving forward even after achieving them.

The recipient of the Woman of the Year Award was Grace and Mercy Director Joanna Mack, who says that it is a fitting award, because Fannie Bronson Postell was an educator, which is what they try to do for every woman who comes through their doors.

Women’s History Month Committee Chair Molly Lewis challenged everyone in attendance to mentor someone in need and says that its now our turn to continue the cause so many women started long ago.

The winner of this year’s $500 Women Educating Women Scholarship was Hopkinsville Community College student Lindsay Baurdreaux. Three local high school students presented essay they had written showcasing various women and the impact they had on the world.
