Dreams, the strength of diversity discussed at African-American Heritage Breakfast

The Modernette’s Civic Club hosted its annual African American Heritage Breakfast at the James E. Bruce Convention Center and heard a message about seeing dreams come true and the joy of diversity.

The keynote speaker was Lane College President Dr. Logan Hampton, who has spent his long career advocating for student success in education and life. Speaking with the crowd Saturday morning, Dr. Hampton urged them maintain positivity in a world that seems predominately negative.

He says dreams do come to true, but at a cost—hard work and sacrifice, as made evident by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He hopes that people dream of solving societal problems and of living the best life they can.

Dr. Hampton spoke passionately about the differences in people, saying those things aren’t mistakes or wrong, but instead make communities stronger.

He says when people learn to accept those differences and realize that doesn’t have to equal hatred, then this country will truly be one nation under God. The Lane College Ensemble Choir performed several pieces and all money raised from the event will go back into the community to help local youth further their education and achieve their goals.
