Suspect shot by his own gun during struggle with trooper in Barren County

Kentucky State Police is investigating after a suspect in police custody was shot with his own gun during a struggle Saturday in Barren County.

Trooper Ricky Cross arrested 26-year old Matthew Stapleton of Columbia in Metcalfe County and transported him to the Barren County Detention Center.

That’s where Stapleton reportedly pulled a handgun from his waistband once outside of the cruiser and a struggle ensued. The gun discharged, striking Stapleton, and he was flown to University of Louisville Hospital in critical condition.

Trooper Cross was not injured and was placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, per KSP policy.
