Hopkinsville kicked off its 5th Big Read Friday night, with the Arts Council and others to host numerous events over the next few weeks focused on ‘The Things They Carried,’ a book by Tim O’Brien that tells stories from the Vietnam War.
Martha White is president of the Pennyroyal Arts Council and says they chose the book because of Hopkinsville’s relationship with Fort Campbell and because it had a profound impact on each person who read it.
She says the book is tough to read in places, but it’s not all about war and death.
A large crowd at the Alhambra was treated to a performance that replicated a Bob Hope USO show from the days of Vietnam.
