Adult suspects arraigned in Bethel Street shooting

Two of the five suspects who are currently in custody for their alleged involvement in a fatal shooting that occurred on Bethel Street Thursday morning were arraigned in Christian District Court Friday.

Twenty-one year old James Joseph Yates and 20-year old Lane Carter, both of Hopkinsville, appeared before District Judge Foster Cotthoff on charges of first-degree robbery and second-degree unlawful transaction with minor. A court clerk read the citation for Carter, which alleges he drove to 1923 Bethel Street around 12 a.m. Thursday and used serious physical force in the commission of a theft, working with multiple juveniles.

During the alleged robbery, 19-year old Dylan Stewart of Hopkinsville sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and 20-year old Corvyan Thomas would die of a gunshot wound.

Judge Cotthoff determined that both Carter and Yates are a danger to others and set their bond at $50,000 each—setting preliminary hearings for February 1.

Three juveniles have been arrested in this case and two are facing charges of complicity to first-degree robbery, while the third is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and criminal possession of a forged instrument. One of those juveniles is 14-years old, according to a citation for Carter.

Police are still seeking 26-year old Shakkory Dashaun Willis of Oak Grove, who is wanted on charges of murder, first-degree robbery and unlawful transaction with a minor. Anyone knowing his whereabouts should call Crime Stoppers at 270-887-TIPS.
