CCHD confirms one case of Hepatitis A in Christian Co., others under investigation

The Christian County Health Department has confirmed one case of Hepatitis A in the county, with one suspected case and three other cases currently being investigated by the Kentucky Department of Public Health.

That’s according to a news release from the department, which states that Hepatitis A has been a growing issue in Kentucky and Christian County has had five possible cases reported, with only one confirmed as of December 29.

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus. It can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a severe illness lasting several months. Although rare, Hepatitis A can cause death in some people. Symptoms of hepatitis A can include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, light-colored stools, joint pain and jaundice.

The best ways to protect yourself from contracting the disease is getting the Hepatitis A vaccine and to perform good handwashing practices. The infection is associated with poor sanitation and hygiene and is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and drink or through direct contact with an infected person.
