The Christian County School Board approved the 2019-2020 school year calendar on first reading at Thursday’s meeting and heard an update about renovations happening at the Breathitt Center.
Director of Pupil Personnel Melanie Barrett presented the calendar, which states the first day of school for students will be August 7 and the last day would be May 20, with fall break to fall on October 7 through 11 and spring break from April 6 through 10. Barrett says this calendar would meet the requirements for instruction set down by the state.
The calendar also allows for multiple make-up days, should inclement weather require those to be used. The calendar will need to be approved on second-reading before becoming final.
The board heard an update from Andrew Owens with Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects on how renovation and additions are going at the Breathitt Center on North Drive, which will become additional learning space for Gateway Academy. He says things are on schedule and operating with no issues to report.
Superintendent Mary Ann Gemmill informed the board that as they go into the new year the school system intends to work with RossTarrant Architects—who helped gather data when discussing long-range facility plans—to reach out to the community to find out what they to see in terms of facilities.
She says they know both high schools have facility needs, particularly Hopkinsville High School, and while right now she doesn’t know what a solution would look like, they intend to start looking into their options. She encouraged the public to attend a League of Women Voters educational forum on February 12 to learn more about what a long-range facility plan might be and give input.
