A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for western Kentucky and surrounding counties from 3 p.m. this afternoon through 6 p.m. Thursday.

In a conference call Wednesday morning, National Weather Service in Paducah Lead Forecaster Kevin Smith says the Hopkinsville area might see around an inch of snow and minor ice accumulations before the event comes to and end.

Some places could see isolated higher amounts of snow. He says to expect icy road conditions to develop in the overnight hours for this area and warned to be on the lookout for black ice.

He says Christian County can expect to see rain during the afternoon hours and maybe some flurries, before the change over to a wintry mix occurs in the evening hours. The winter weather is likely to end sometime late Thursday morning, according to Smith.

A post from the Hopkinsville Public Works Department says crews are ready to respond with salt and snow plows in the event of any accumulation. Kentucky State Police advises drivers to leave early and give themselves extra time to get to their destination, so they can drive cautiously on the road.

They say to also increase the usual distance between traveling vehicles and make sure your cellphone is fully charged before traveling.
