Clarksville Police say a man drowned Tuesday night after jumping into the Cumberland River in an attempt to get away from officers.

A news release says that just after 10:30 p.m., an officer made a traffic stop on a vehicle with a  brake light out in a parking lot on North Riverside Drive.

The 39-year old male driver got out of the vehicle and ran toward the river and officers recognized him as having multiple warrants for his arrest, including one for aggravated assault.

He jumped into the Cumberland River behind Waffle House and attempted to swim across, but went into distress about halfway across and began yelling for help.

Officers encouraged him to swim back toward them and went into the water to help, but they were unable to reach him before he went under and never returned to the surface.

His body was located by search crews about an hour later. His name has not been released, pending next of kin notification.
