Sen. Paul opposes aid for farmers, says remove tariffs

President Trump and the Department of Agriculture announced $12 billion in emergency aid for farmers adversely impacted by new tariffs on American grain, produce and meat exports, but U.S. Senator Rand Paul of Bowling Green doesn’t believe that’s the best course of action.

In a tweet Tuesday, Senator Paul said “Tariffs are taxes that hurt Americans.”

Paul continued, “If tariffs punish farmers, the answer is not welfare for farmers—the answer is remove the tariffs.”

Kentucky soybean farmers are facing prices that are down sharply from previous years due to tariffs imposed by countries that buy American goods in response to the President’s new tariffs to combat trade practices he believes are cheating the system.
