HES receives loan for internet expansion

The Kentucky Infrastructure Authority has approved $4.3 million in loans to Hopkinsville Electric System for expansion of broadband internet service.

The money will fund the installation of 50 miles of aerial and 15 miles of underground fiber, according to the Kentucky League of Cities, which says that will allow HES to expand high-speed internet to 3,600 additional customers.

Legislators had initially tabled the loan request when they met in June, but voted in favor of the measure this month after hearing testimony from state Senator Whitney Westerfield on the importance of the expansion to Hopkinsville.

This is the second phase of a three-phase expansion that will eventually make Hopkinsville a “Gig City.”
