Local Red Cross in critical need of volunteers

The local chapter of the Red Cross is in critical need of a volunteers, and they are reaching out to the community for help.

The organization held an open house event Monday in the hope of finding new volunteers, because as of this moment, the local chapter that covers Christian, Todd and Trigg Counties is being served by two people. That includes Kathy Hayes, who says new volunteers are desperately needed to help those affected by disasters, such as tornadoes or fires.

Western Kentucky branch Executive Director Evelyn Miller says there are roughly 55 house fires in Christian County yearly that the Red Cross responds to and provides assistance to those affected.

Disaster Program Manager Linda Ehrsam of the western Kentucky branch says volunteers are only asked to do as much as they want, and volunteering doesn’t have to be response—it can be community involvement and educational outreaches.

They all described their need for volunteers as desperate, so anyone interested in volunteering can go online to redcross.org to apply or go by the local office at 709 South Main Street.
