Five dead, including suspect, in eastern Ky. shootings

Five people are dead, including the suspect, following a shooting spree Saturday afternoon in Johnson County, Kentucky.

Kentucky State Police says in a news release they received the initial call of a shooting about 3:40 p.m.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office tells sister station WKLW Radio that deputies found two people dead in the kitchen of a home on McKenzie Branch Road.

A search began for the suspect and police soon received a tip that his vehicle was on Mill Street in Paintsville. A news release says two additional victims, along with the suspect identified as Joseph Nickell, were found dead inside an apartment. Police say Nickell took his own life after committing the murders.

Sheriff Dwayne Price stated, “The lives of four innocent victims were taken. The perpetrator then took his own life. There are no words to describe the heartbreak in seeing four lives taken due to the actions of one man. I have worked in law enforcement for 34 years. This is one of the most disturbing acts of violence I have ever seen.”
