Hopkinsville Track Senior Gavin Alston wins Player of the Week

This week’s Jennie Stuart Orthopedic – Michael Venable State Farm Player of the Week is Gavin Alston.

Gavin is a senior at Hopkinsville High School and is also a member of the Tiger Track team.

In his last meet on March 30th, at the Calloway County Laker Track Invitational Alston placed 1st in the 200 Meter Dash (22.98) and 4×200 Meter Relay, while also placing second in the 400 Meter Dash (50.84) and 4×400 Meter Relay.

As far as the beginning of his track journey, Gavin has his parents to thank, as they both ran in high school.

When it comes to having two former track athletes for parents, one can imagine how invested they can be in their child’s competitions.

Gavin described what those experiences are like during and after his meets.

While being a member of the track team, Gavin was also on the football team playing the corner position this past fall.

He explained how his work on the gridiron and in the weight room during football season helped him prepare for now.

So far this season, Alston has ran in the 400 and 200 Meter race, while also participating in the 4×400 and 2×200 meter relays.

As far as his favorite race, he says it’s changed recently from what it was.

When asked what his best skill was in running track, Gavin’s answer perfectly described why he enjoys running the 200 meter race the most.

With Gavin being a senior this year, he explained how he has embraced his leadership role and worked to be available for his teammates when needed.

For Gavin, his goals for this season are to run under 50 seconds in the 400 and under 22 in the 200. When asked what he needed to do to achieve these goals, this was his answer.

Gavin also gave his take on what the biggest differences are between the 200 and 400 races.

For most people including high school students, Saturdays are considered to be one of the most coveted days of the week due to relaxation.

However, it is the complete opposite for track athletes in regards to the rigorous activity. Despite that, Gavin wouldn’t trade his Saturdays for anything because he spends them doing something he loves.

Lastly, Gavin shared what his favorite part about being on the track team was?

Next up for Alston and the rest of his team is the Owensboro Invitational on Saturday, April 13.
