Mayor looks to the future, talks projects, recycling

Hopkinsville Mayor Carter Hendricks recently returned to WHOP to discuss curbside recycling, projects that are currently in the works and more.

Hendricks says they expect the Hopkinsville Sportsplex to open before the end of the year and other projects such as the expansion of the Greenway system will soon begin.

Having just recently won re-election in the November general election, Hendricks says he’s excited about the next four years as they intend to improve the quality of life with safety and infrastructure projects.

On curbside recycling, which passed on first-reading at the last city council meeting, he says there is some risk involved in the effort, but it will help Hopkinsville compete in a 21st century society.

He says state officials have been surveying West Seventh Street and he hopes that in the next couple of budget cycles, some state money will be allocated to begin widening that section of road.

West Seventh Street is a state road, which means all the City of Hopkinsville can do is advocate for projects to take place that, not do any itself, according to Hendricks. He says the city advocates often to hopefully get that underway.
