The Hopkinsville Fire Department remembered the nearly 3,000 people, including 343 firefighters, who were killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks during its annual remembrance ceremony and stair climb Wednesday morning.
Chief Steve Futrell noted that the day is approaching when the youngest firefighters will not have been born on 9/11, but the department will always remember the sacrifice given on that day.
Mayor Carter Hendricks says sacrifices have continued to be made since 9/11, with Hopkinsville losing one of its own to the War on Terror.
He challenged civilians in the community to find their own ways to sacrifice to make Hopkinsville and the world a better place.
Firefighters did their annual stair climb in the tower behind the department in honor of the fallen at the conclusion of the service.
