CCPS officials talk projects, start of school year

The new school year is now well underway and Christian County Public School System officials appeared on WHOP Friday to talk about what initiatives are taking place this year.

Superintendent Mary Ann Gemmill says they had a smooth, energetic start to the new year, which was full of new teachers, new principals and new students.  She says enrollment was around 8,500 students this year, though they’ll have more accurate numbers after Labor Day.

She says one area that had a smoother start than expected was the traffic situation on Millbrooke Drive, due to the construction of a new bridge in that area.  Gemmill says thanks to a collaborative effort between the school system, the City of Hopkinsville and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, drop off traffic seemed to flow better.

Chief Operations Officer Brad Hawkins says many projects were completed over the summer, including a total re-roof of the 200 hall at Hopkinsville High School and the construction of two safety vestibules in schools that did not have them before.

He says a re-roofing project will next begin at South Christian Elementary School.  Gemmill also talked about the success of Gateway and its new expansion that’s holding the Health Sciences courses, saying it’s creating a pipeline for students into high paying careers.
