The Christian County School Board voted at Thursday’s meeting to leave the property tax rate the same as last year’s at 42.8 cents per $100 of assessed value.
That was the recommendation of Superintendent Mary Ann Gemmill to leave the rate the same instead of taking the 4 percent increase in revenue that the district has the option of taking each year. Gemmill says that with the board asking property owners to accept a ‘nickel tax’—which is up for vote on the ballot during the November general election—it would be unfair to impose another increase on them.
Gemmill does encourage residents to vote yes on the nickel tax, which she says is much needed for the future of their facilities.
Director of Business Jessica Darnell says by leaving the rate the same, the district will still see an increase of approximately $767,000 in new revenue.
Thirty-three percent of the school district’s revenue comes from local taxes. Following the vote, member Jeff Moore urged the public to attend more meetings and see what the board is doing with their tax dollars and be a part of the process.
