Feeding America program to be in Hopkinsville Saturday

The Feeding America program will be distributing food to approximately 500 households in Christian County Saturday through the state-funded Farms to Food Banks program.

The distribution will be organized by Aaron McNeil House at the Boys and Girls Club on Walnut Street and it begins at 9 a.m.

State Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke serves as co-chair of the Tobacco Settlement Oversight Committee in Frankfort, which oversees funding handed down from the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.

Over $100 million in payments are made annually from the Master Settlement Agreement, including $1 million in the current budget for “Farms to Food Banks,” a statewide program aimed at distributing fresh produce to hungry Kentuckians.

In a news release Dossett says, “I am proud to be a strong supporter of our food banks, who go above and beyond to help our needy families make healthy food choices, rather than choosing foods lacking in nutrition like chips and soft drinks.”

Representative Walker Thomas is also pleased with the program saying, “Thanks to the General Assembly’s action to allocate money in the budget for this program, along with the tireless work and advocacy of Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles and private organizations, we are tackling the hunger epidemic in a real and meaningful way.”

Dossett says anyone is welcome to utilize the food bank.
