Multiple indictments returned for murder, kidnapping, assault

A Christian County Grand Jury returned multiple indictments Friday, including for a charge of murder against 19-year old Anshanique Leavell of Hopkinsville.

Leavell is accused in the June 6 shooting death of Amareya’ Freeman at an apartment complex on Greenville Road and she was indicted Friday on charges of murder, receiving stolen property and complicity to tampering with physical evidence. As previously reported, the Hopkinsville Police Department responded Greenville Road just after midnight on June 6 and arrived on scene to find Amareya’ Freeman of Hopkinsville unresponsive on scene with a gunshot wound to the chest. CPR was performed and Freeman was taken to Jennie Stuart Medical Center, where he would die of his injuries.

24-year old Chancelor Averitt of Hopkinsville was indicted for kidnapping with serious physical injury, first-degree assault, wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police, DUI and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. Averitt allegedly held a female victim against her will at gunpoint in a vehicle and then became involved in a high speed pursuit in June. Police say he had shot at her and pistol-whipped the victim, causing serious lacerations to her head and face. Averitt told officers he was under the influence of alcohol.

Indicted for six counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, six counts of terroristic threatening, two counts of unlawful transaction with a minor, six counts of second-degree unlawful imprisonment and complicity to fourth-degree assault is 20-year old Deovion Day of Cadiz. He allegedly aided two juveniles in assaulting a third juvenile, which caused injuries to the victim in November of 2018. He reportedly held people in the residence where the assault occurred at gunpoint, threatening to ‘blow their heads off’ if they intervened in the assault.

Also indicted on six counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property, second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor and complicity to criminal mischief is 19-year old Darrius Quarles of Hopkinsville.

He is alleged to have been the driver of a vehicle that matched the description of one involved in a shots fired incident on Moores Drive in May. A traffic stop was conducted and search of the vehicle revealed a stolen handgun, which had been in the vehicle along with multiple juveniles, and Quarles is alleged to have assisted the juveniles with commission of a felony.
