Local legislators talk pension bill as special session likely coming

Three local legislators say they could be a yes vote for Governor Matt Bevin’s proposed legislation to provide some pension relief to quasi-governmental agencies—though some are more enthusiastic than others.

Local health departments and agencies such as Sanctuary, Inc. could see their required contribution to the pension fund for their employees spike dramatically July 1 without action during a special session.

Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke says he likes the bill as it stands now.

Representative Walker Thomas of Hopkinsville says you can also count him among the yes votes, it’s just a matter of finding a date when a vast majority of lawmakers can make it back to Frankfort.

Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County says he’d vote for the bill if his vote is needed, but he remains frustrated believing it doesn’t provide long-term relief those agencies need.

Governor Matt Bevin’s administration reportedly indicated Wednesday that they believe they have the necessary votes to pass the measure.

Dossett says a date for a special session remains up in the air and it could come after the 4th of July holiday.
