HFD Chief Freddie Montgomery announces retirement

Hopkinsville Fire Department Chief Freddie Montgomery has announced he’s retiring, effective August 1, following 25 years of service to the city.

He was promoted to chief in February of 2014 and has helped the department attain its best ranking ever among the top 2% nationally in fire suppression. Chief Montgomery has also overseen the acquisition of equipment and a training facility to make the department more safe and effective.

In 2015, he was named the Kentucky League of Cities Employee of the Year and he served as the second vice president for the Kentucky Fire Chief’s Association.

Speaking with WHOP News, Chief Montgomery says it’s a bittersweet feeling, as the City of Hopkinsville has been great to him and his department, but the time seemed right.

He’s not saying with the future holds for him yet, but says he knows the city is in good hands with the leadership within the fire department.

A farewell reception has been scheduled for 5 p.m., Tuesday, July 16 at the Hopkinsville Municipal Center.
